Matrix Integration’s Community Participation in Strassenfest.
Strassenfest is a celebration dedicated to Jasper, Indiana’s German heritage. It’s earliest origins date back to 1895, when Jasper celebrated its first German Day Celebration, then later was more of a Pioneer German Days in 1957, and has been Strassenfest since 1979.
Events and activities throughout these celebrations of the strong German heritage in Jasper have changed and grown, but the underlying theme has remained strong and consistent throughout. This celebration of heritage and community has changed locations and specifics over time due to size, construction, additions and deletions from the schedules, but those fibers of togetherness and shared history continue to draw people back to Jasper each and every year for this celebration.
What brings people back, from Jasper, surrounding towns and even visitors from further away each year is this cultural celebration with its variety of foods, activities and events that interest all ages. From authentic German food (including Wienerschnitzel, of course!) and Pupusas to maypole dancing and axe throwing, families and groups of friends can find things to see and do for everyone in their party. Strassenfest is also not a one stop destination, as it’s held in different areas for different events, so it’s a fun way to enjoy several days of culture and being outdoors celebrating community and Jasper itself!
This year, Matrix Integration again took part in the Strassenfest, but in a new and different way. Brenda Stallings, CEO of Matrix, nominated Jasper for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s “Community of the Year” award for 2018. As a result of being one of Jasper’s strong leaders, she was named the 2019 Strassenfest Hofmarschall (Grand Marshall)!
Brenda’s Grand Marshall position this year led to more involvement and commitment from our Matrix Integration family and team, as we also participated in the parade with a float. This was something we really enjoyed taking part in and it was a great way for us to learn and grow as a work team. It was nice being part of our community both as citizens and as part of a business that cares about our neighbors, and the Strassenfest is a great event that lets us enjoy both our work and personal lives!
